War and Peace (Pevear/Volokhonsky Translation) Leo Tolstoy

We'll see on that day where I stand with my resolution to read Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace in 2010. Things don't turn out well for her after that. What War and Peace is, I suppose, it the biggest and baddest attempt at experimental/historical fiction ever attempted. The first translation I read YEARS ago was Constance Garnett's from 1901, and it didn't have even a fraction of the life-force of the Pevear/Volokhonsky version. Elaine makes a misguided attempt to ingratiate herself with a famous Russian writer (hilariously named Testikov) by telling him what Jerry had jokingly told her earlier: that the original title of War and Peace was War, What Is It Good For? I read the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation, and I was absolutely blown away. A battlefield that starts out crisply beautiful, a golden autumn scene, and gradually transforms into a muddy hell. Eventually found the updated Pevear & Volokhonsky translation which made all the difference. Pevear is an American, and his wife Larissa Volokhonsky is russian, between them they have delivered a number of very good translations. 6: For 'War and Peace' try the 'Richard Pevear, and Larissa Volokhonsky' translation. The job of the 1 War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy.
